On a cold night, few things are as satisfying as a hot drink. Whether you’re relaxing at home or entertaining, these adult beverages are sure to keep you and your guests warm and cheery.

Hot Drinks for Cold Nights

1 Hot wine is simple and very popular. It’s a staple in ski lodges, alpine resorts and in Scandinavian countries where they know how to deal with the cold. Heat a dry red wine on the stove, but don’t bring it to a boil. Serve immediately, or pour it into an insulated carafe if you’re serving a crowd. For special occasions, add an equal amount of aquavit plus orange slices, cinnamon sticks and sugar. Japanese wine, called sake, is usually served hot.

2 Hot buttered rum is an American staple that has been enjoyed since the 1600s. To make this historic concoction, place 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 teaspoon of sugar in a mug. Next, add 2 ounces of dark rum and an equal amount of boiling water. Stir until blended. Then, add boiling water until the mug is full. To finish, sprinkle with ground nutmeg or mulling spices.

3 If you’re feeling under the weather, you’ll appreciate the comfort and simplicity of a hot toddy. Start by adding a teaspoon of honey and an equal amount of lemon juice to a teacup. Add 1.5 ounces of rum, and top with boiling water. If you prefer, use bourbon or brandy instead.

4 Even if you’ve never traveled to the Emerald Isle, you can certainly enjoy a traditional Irish coffee. Combine 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1.5 ounces of Irish whiskey or Baileys Irish Cream in a warm mug. Stir well. Fill with freshly brewed coffee, and top with whipped cream.
