We all have our good, old standbys when it comes to drink selections after those especially long days. But sometimes experimenting can be fun, so we delved into the vast world of cocktails to see what’s trending these days.
Perhaps the next time you’re enjoying a quiet night at home, you can mix things up a bit with a new drink. They say change is inevitable – we find embracing it sometimes reveals pleasant surprises.
Here are some recipes that caught our attention:
1 The Burgundy – As best we can tell, this is indeed christened after “Anchorman” movie star Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy character. It’s described as simple yet satisfying. You’ll need this: 1.5 ounces Canadian Club whisky; 4 ounces ginger ale; cranberry juice; and, ice. Add the whisky and ginger ale to a rocks glass (i.e., short tumbler or lowball glass) filled with ice. Top off with a bit of cranberry juice, and you’re all set to enjoy this sweet and bubbly delight.
2 Lemon Drop – Many are familiar with this yummy, sweet-and-tart blend. What you’ll need: sugar; 2 ounces vodka, .5 ounce triple sec; 1 ounce simple syrup (one part sugar, one part water); 1 ounce fresh lemon juice; and, a lemon twist. Coat a cocktail glass rim with sugar, set aside to allow sugar to stick to glass. Add other ingredients to a shaker, fill with ice, shake, and strain into glass. Garnish with lemon twist for a citrusy treat with just a little effort.
3 Jameson Honeysuckle – Taste the sweeter side of Irish whiskey. Use these ingredients: 1.5 ounces Jameson blended Irish whiskey; 2 teaspoons honey; 1.25 ounces Sauvignon Blanc; 1.5 ounces fresh apple juice; .25 ounce passion fruit syrup; .25 ounce fresh lemon juice; and, a thin apple slice. Put everything into a shaker, fill with ice, and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail or stemless wine glass. Garnish with the apple slice for a sweet, fruity drink.
4 Ginger Smash – Ginger mixed with three spirits and fruits makes a citrusy and sweet cocktail. What you need: 2 matchbox-sized chunks of fresh pineapple; 2 long, thin slices of fresh ginger root; 1 teaspoon of sugar; 1.5 ounces of 10 Cane Rum; .75 ounce Luxardo maraschino liqueur; .75 ounce apple liqueur; .5 ounce fresh lime juice; and, a pineapple leaf. Muddle the pineapple, ginger, and sugar in shaker until a paste forms. Add remaining ingredients, fill halfway with ice, and shake briefly. Pour (unstrained) into a rocks glass, and garnish with the pineapple leaf.
5 Mint ChocoChata – Think of this as dessert in a glass. Get these items: 1 ounce RumChata; .3 ounce chocolate vodka; .25 ounce green crème de menthe; and, chocolate chips or shavings. Simply add everything to an ice-filled shaker, shake, and strain into a cocktail glass. Use your chocolate of choice to garnish for a nice and creamy treat.
